In recent years, we have seen the formation and rise of cryptocurrency (crypto). Bitcoin, first released as open-source software in 2009, is the first decentralized cryptocurrency. Since the release of bitcoin, many other cryptocurrencies have been created. As of March 2022, the global market cap for crypto is over $2 trillion U.S. dollars. In comparison, the New York Stock Exchange is the largest stock exchange in the world, with an equity market capitalization of just over $27.7 trillion U.S. dollars as of December 2021. That is remarkable considering crypto’s short history.

So what is crypto?
• A cryptocurrency is an encrypted data string that denotes a unit of currency. It is monitored and organized by a peer-to-peer network called a blockchain, which also serves as a secure ledger of transactions, e.g., buying, selling, and transferring.
