Six Sigma is a methodology for process improvement that uses statistical analysis and data-driven decision making to reduce variability in manufacturing, service, and administrative processes. The Six Sigma Yellow Belt Certification is an introductory course that provides participants with a basic understanding of Six Sigma and its related methodologies.
Six Sigma is an approach to organizational improvement based on statistical methods. Six Sigma is a process-improvement methodology used to reduce defects (errors) and variation in manufacturing, service, and administrative processes.
The courseware covers what it takes to be a successful team member in any organization that uses this approach. You will learn how to apply basic concepts of quality management such as cost reduction, waste elimination, quality improvement and customer satisfaction as well as how they relate to project management tools such as Pareto charts or histograms (for example). You will also learn about DMAIC methodologies used for process improvement:
- Define – Understanding what we want our process outputs should look like in terms of quality characteristics (e.g., length, width etc.).
- Measure – Quantifying aspects of variability within the current state by collecting data via measurements on samples representative from across all elements in our system.

Difference between yellow, green and black belt certifications
The yellow belt certification is a pre-requisite to the green belt certification, which in turn is a pre-requisite to the black belt certification. A yellow belt certification is valid for two years and must be renewed every two years by completing another training course or project under the supervision of an experienced Black Belt.
A Green Belt has at least three years of experience as a Six Sigma Black Belt and has been recognized for his/her contribution to company improvement efforts by attaining operational excellence. Green Belts use advanced tools and techniques that allow them to analyze data, identify root causes, develop solutions and implement process improvements.
A Black Belt has at least five years of experience as a Green Belt with proven success in implementing several Six Sigma projects within their organization. They possess expert knowledge about all aspects of Six Sigma DMAIC methodology including its cycle time reduction techniques such as Kaizen blitzes, process mapping etc., work with senior management on strategic improvement initiatives aligned with business goals and contribute significantly towards improving productivity levels through continuous improvements throughout all stages of product development life cycle (PDLC).
